Why AI Agents will be a huge disaster

So, if you’re in the tech space for some time, you might be hearing a lot like “2025 will be the year of Agents” & “AI Agents will take over the world”. While they are powerful, I totally disagree with the claims that they will take over the world. Even Meta and Salesforce have claimed that they might replace some of their workforce with AI Agents. Trust me, these are all tactics to boost stock prices.

I’ve been working on AI Agents since their inception, and have explored almost all packages and large language models (LLMs) as well, and there exist a few reasons why I believe so:

1. The LLMs, Being Good, Are Still Far From Reaching 100% Accuracy

That’s true. Don’t get swayed away by benchmark numbers shared over social media. It’s all to create hype.

From my personal experience, the models are great, but whenever I wish to automate intermediary stuff, they fail badly. When we say AI Agents replacing humans, we need to reach 100% accuracy on real-world problems and not just on benchmarks. In real-world applications, errors can have significant consequences, and AI models aren’t infallible. They’re impressive at certain tasks, but as of now, they are not ready to replace humans entirely.

For example, the use of AI in industries such as healthcare or legal systems demands absolute precision, where even a small mistake could lead to disastrous results. The gap between theoretical benchmarks and practical accuracy remains too large, making full automation too risky.

2. AI Agents Have a Hard Time Choosing Tools

I’ve been trying many proofs of concept (POCs), and one common issue I’ve faced is that AI Agents aren’t great at deciding when to pick a tool versus when to rely on their internal knowledge. This problem becomes even harder when playing with multiple tools in complex environments.

AI Agents are designed to execute tasks, but they often struggle to determine the optimal approach for a particular situation.

For instance, if you need to make a decision involving both data analysis and human judgment, AI might over-rely on one tool without properly incorporating the necessary nuances of the task. When multiple tools are in play, coordinating their use intelligently becomes a challenge that current AI systems can’t fully address. This can lead to inefficiencies and errors in workflows, making them far less reliable than human workers.

3. Trust Issues Will Always Exist

AI Agents, after all, depend on machine learning models, which can never be 100% accurate. One mistake and the audience or customer will lose trust. Just think,

Would you risk your finances or healthcare with an AI-Agent?

Would you be comfortable taking a medicine prescribed by an agent?

Are organizations okay with pushing AI-generated code directly to production?

I don’t think so.

Trust is a fundamental element of any successful human-AI collaboration. People need to feel confident that the AI system can deliver consistent, accurate, and safe results. With every mistake, trust erodes. We’ve seen this already in fields like autonomous vehicles, where even a small number of accidents lead to public backlash. The same can be said for sectors where human life or significant financial interests are involved — people will remain cautious about relying on AI systems to make critical decisions.

4. A Human Layer is Still Essential

While AI Agents may excel at handling repetitive, time-consuming tasks, the human layer will always be necessary to make judgment calls, intervene in edge cases, and ensure that ethical standards are adhered to. No matter how sophisticated AI becomes, it lacks human empathy, intuition, and the ability to navigate the moral complexities of the real world.

Imagine an AI Agent attempting to handle sensitive customer service interactions or mediating disputes in the workplace. While it may be able to offer solutions based on data, it will always fall short when it comes to understanding emotional nuance and offering the kind of human connection that many individuals expect. Therefore, AI will not be able to replace humans in roles that require empathy, creativity, or complex ethical reasoning.

In many ways, AI Agents can be viewed as tools to enhance human capabilities, rather than replace them altogether. These agents can perform tasks to support human workers, but they can’t fully take the place of a thoughtful, ethical, and compassionate human presence.

5. Biases Exist and Will Persist in AI Systems

AI Agents’ performance depends on the data they are trained on. If the data has biases, that bias creeps into everything they operate on. AI models do not have conscience or ethical reasoning capabilities like humans. So, if they’re trained on data with inherent biases, the problems will be there.

One of the biggest challenges with AI Agents is ensuring fairness and inclusivity. AI models are often trained on large datasets scraped from the internet, which is notorious for carrying societal biases. For example, if an AI Agent is used in hiring or law enforcement, it could unintentionally perpetuate gender or racial discrimination if its training data reflects those patterns. The consequences of such biases could be devastating, affecting real lives and reinforcing societal inequities.

Furthermore, biases in AI models are not easily detectable or fixable. Even with increased scrutiny and fine-tuning, it can be difficult to eliminate all forms of bias from a machine-learning model. This is why transparency and continuous monitoring are essential in AI systems, but even these measures can’t guarantee that AI Agents will always act impartially.

6. Ethical and Legal Concerns: AI Agents Could Open Pandora’s Box

The implementation of AI Agents could lead to a myriad of ethical and legal challenges.

Who is responsible when an AI Agent makes a mistake?

Who is accountable when an AI system is used for malicious purposes, like manipulating public opinion or committing fraud?

These are crucial questions that don’t have easy answers.

Governments, corporations, and tech companies need to establish clear guidelines and regulations to govern the use of AI Agents. Otherwise, the unchecked proliferation of these systems could lead to a range of unintended consequences, from privacy violations to monopolies. If AI Agents are allowed to operate without adequate oversight, they could exacerbate the very problems they are meant to solve, including inequality and loss of jobs.

Moreover, issues surrounding AI rights, data ownership, and user consent will become increasingly pressing as these technologies advance. Without a framework for protecting individuals and society at large, AI Agents could very well pose a threat to the very freedoms they are meant to enhance.

7. Over-reliance on AI Can Lead to a Loss of Critical Skills

The more we rely on AI Agents, the more we risk losing our own problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. If AI starts handling an increasing number of tasks — from basic data entry to more complex decision-making — humans may begin to atrophy in their cognitive functions.

Just like any tool, over-reliance on AI can diminish human capabilities. In workplaces where employees might become overly dependent on AI to complete their jobs, they could lose essential skills over time. It’s similar to the concerns surrounding GPS navigation — people can no longer navigate as well without the assistance of technology. Similarly, in a world dominated by AI Agents, people may lose their ability to think creatively or perform complex problem-solving tasks without technological aid.

In the end, while AI Agents could free up time and allow us to focus on higher-level tasks, they could also make us less self-sufficient and more vulnerable to technological failures.

Conclusion

AI Agents, while undoubtedly an impressive and transformative technology, come with serious drawbacks that cannot be ignored. From trust issues and bias to a lack of ethical accountability and reliance on imperfect models, the risks outweigh the benefits when it comes to fully replacing human workers or decisions. While AI Agents will undoubtedly play an important role in augmenting human capabilities, they should never be seen as a replacement for humans.

The hype surrounding AI Agents taking over the world is just that — hype. Until these technologies evolve to address the numerous flaws outlined above, AI Agents are not ready to dominate our workforces or make life-altering decisions. It’s essential that we approach their integration thoughtfully, ensuring that humans remain at the centre of any process involving AI.’
